Nepali American Leader Somnath Ghimire Enters New York State Assembly Race

New York— Nepali American community leader Somnath Ghimire has announced his candidacy for the New York State Assembly from Queens’ pivotal Assembly District 30. He is running in the Democratic primary scheduled for June 23, 2026, with early voting set to take place from June 13 through June 21.

Assembly District 30 covers the diverse Queens neighborhoods of Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Maspeth, and Middle Village. In this multicultural district, Ghimire has been actively engaging residents through community meetings and outreach programs, presenting his vision for a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive Queens.

Speaking about his campaign, Ghimire said he has been meeting regularly with neighbors, seniors, and young people to exchange ideas on building better communities. He emphasized that unity in diversity is essential for peace, progress, and shared prosperity.

His campaign priorities include expanding affordable housing, strengthening public schools, protecting workers’ rights, supporting small businesses, and ensuring inclusive representation for all residents of Assembly District 30. He has also pledged to be a strong advocate for immigrant families and to safeguard their rights.

A resident of Woodside, Queens, since 1996, Ghimire has spent more than two decades serving the Nepali American and South Asian communities as a dedicated organizer and advocate. He worked as a Field Supervisor for the 2020 U.S. Census and has participated in human rights missions in 22 countries through INHURED International.

“Public service is not just about speaking—it is about listening, showing up, and standing up for the people,” Ghimire said, reaffirming his commitment to improving the quality of life for district residents.

As part of his primary campaign, Ghimire is raising funds to expand voter outreach and build a strong grassroots movement, encouraging community members and supporters to contribute.
